Shrivenham Sports Pavilion: Designed by local firm A’Bear and Ball Architects

A’Bear & Ball Architects LLP was commissioned by Shrivenham Parish Council to design the new Shrivenham Sports Pavilion next to the existing Grade II Listed Memorial Hall on the local recreation ground in the centre of Shrivenham.

The Shrivenham Sports Pavilion is a much needed community building that will provide changing and social facilities for the local cricket club. The building will also accommodate a number of indoor sports and fitness activities for the local community including short mat bowls, children’s tennis, table tennis, martial arts and exercise classes.

The Chair of Shrivenham Parish Council states, “A’Bear & Ball were appointed after a rigorous competitive tendering procedure and very quickly provided the Trust with a range of sketch schemes based on the ideas discussed in the initial briefing.

“The brief was tricky because of the need to maximize the year round requirements of the community together with providing a bespoke cricket facility for the summer months, all within the constraints of a very tight budget.”

Planning Permission & Construction Information for Shrivenham Sports Pavilion

A’Bear & Ball Architects delivered full architectural services under RIBA Stages 1 – 4 on this project, which included the preparation and submission of drawings to the Vale of White Horse District Council for pre-application scrutiny and then for full planning permission.

A’Bear & Ball Architects LLP looked to create a modern design that respected its sensitive location in the Conservation Area and close to the Grade II Listed Memorial Hall.

“The result was an elegant modern design constructed from traditional materials which matched the existing listed arts and crafts styled Memorial Hall,” Shrivenham Parish Council shares. “The interior integrated the needs for changing facilities while providing plenty of space for a range of different sports and indoor activities as well as making a pleasant entertainment venue.”

After planning permission was granted, the practice then prepared full detailed design information for tender and construction purposes whilst also obtaining Building Regulations Approval for the works.

Throughout several months of detailed design development, A’Bear & Ball Architects co-ordinated the input of various third-party specialist consultants and worked closely with Shrivenham Parish Council to develop the detailed specification for the construction and fit out of the building.

Shrivenham Parish Council explains, “At each stage they presented a clear set of drawings including a photo montage showing how the new pavilion integrated with the existing Memorial Hall. They also provided presentation drawings for community consultation and patiently explained the exigencies of the planning process to members of the Trust. They guided the client through the tender process and the selection of contractors.

With the project having been tendered in 2019, the Practice is excited to anticipate construction commencing in the autumn of this year with completion planned for Spring 2021 in time for the commencement of the new cricket season.
