Plot 154 project in Graven Hill shortlisted at Building Innovation Awards

We are really excited to announce more awards news! A’Bear & Ball Architects LLP has been shortlisted for the Best Use of Timber on a Construction Project at the 2023 Building Innovation Awards for our work on Plot 154 in Graven Hill.

The Building Innovation Awards’ judges were looking for construction projects that used mass timber to help their clients achieve and exceed their sustainability targets.

We are one of five shortlisted in this category. The winners will be announced at a gala dinner and awards ceremony on 12 October at Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester. You can check out the full shortlist here.

Best use of Timber on a Construction Project

A’Bear & Ball Architects has a growing track record of designing timber frame homes. Plot 154 is an ultra-contemporary, low energy self-build of hybrid construction. It was constructed from timber panels supported by steel beams.

The home was erected in a matter of days and provides a strong contemporary architectural statement to Graven Hill in Bicester, Oxfordshire. The home has been completely tailored to the lifestyle of the owner, who wanted to create ‘The Ultimate Bachelor Pad'. It was designed and constructed completely unique to him as an individual by A’Bear & Ball Architects.

Plot 154 is extremely low energy with a heating demand that is virtually negligible. The materials used for the frame were sustainably sourced lowering the embodied carbon footprint of this exemplary home.

By following low-energy and Lifetime Home design principles and immense investment in Home Automation, it’s a property fit for the future and will be the self-builder’s ‘forever home’.

Other awards and features on Plot 154

Plot 154 was also shortlisted as the Custom & Self Build Project of the Year at the 2022 Structural Timber Awards and was a finalist in the Best Eco Home and Best Timber Frame Home categories at the 2022 Build It Awards!

On top of that, the project was featured on Grand Designs: The Streets. Kevin McCloud described it as ‘resplendent’ and ‘finely tailored’ with a ‘slight swagger’. ‘It’s cool, it’s controlled’, ‘Glamorous, geometric and glorious’, ‘Super graphic and particularly well detailed’.
