Cothill Sports Centre
The new Sports Centre at Cothill House School, near Abingdon in Oxfordshire, is designed to significantly improve the limited existing facilities on the site. By providing more indoor spaces onsite, the centre enhances the school’s ability to host a variety of sports and other activities year-round. Additionally, the centre offers valuable utility space for general assemblies, exams, and parents’ evenings, supporting the school’s broader operational needs.
The sports centre includes a multi-sports hall that can accommodate Tennis, Cricket Nets, Football, Basketball, and Badminton. A smaller hall is dedicated to Gymnastics, Table Tennis, Dance, and Drama, ensuring a versatile environment for both physical education and performance arts. The facility also features a squash court and a climbing wall, further diversifying the range of available activities. Supporting these functions are staff and pupil changing areas and a viewing gallery that enhances the spectator experience.
The design incorporates impressive, curved roofs supported by curved steel roof beams, giving the building a distinctive architectural character. The smaller hall includes Brise Soleil for effective shading on the southern and eastern facades. Acoustic panels integrated into the walls help maintain a comfortable acoustic environment for users throughout the facility.
A’Bear and Ball were appointed by the contractor, Feltham Construction, to develop the Stage 3 design prepared by Edgingtons Architects, undertaking the technical design and providing construction stage assistance.
